bye-bye, Sex and the City (some spoilers. beware.)

I don't normally watch Oprah.

Scratch that; I NEVER watch Oprah. I despise the woman.

But, the other day, between boredom and studying, I found myself channel-surfing. And I heard it: the Sex and the City theme song. I stopped.

The whole cast on Oprah! To talk about the last show! And the series! Sex and the City-ness! How could I miss this?

Well, I couldn't.

Does anyone else find it odd to watch characters you're familiar with as, um, not characters? Just the actors they are instead of the characters they play? Yeah, it's odd for me. Seeing Sarah Jessica Parker, and not Carrie, was a bit mind-blowing. (And not really in a good way, either. I like watching shows like I enjoy reading books, creating real worlds for these fictional characters, not fictional characters for real people.)

So, anyway, the cast bonded and gabbed with Oprah and some audience members about the show: why they like it, how they feel now that it's over, how they got to know each other through it, the denial they're having that it's over.. And Sarah Jessica Parker was fighting tears.

And then I realised that I, too, was crying.

This wrong on two levels:

1. I am such a fucking sap.

2. IT'S A FUCKING TV SHOW. (Yes, that slightly contradicts my partenthetical comment above, but whatevah.)

Being in Canada and getting the show through Bravo and not HBO, I'm a few episodes behind. In America, the last S&TC is being aired on Sunday. My finale of the show gets stretched for about another month or two. I take this as a Good Thing, but at the same time, some of my favourite diarists are discussing it and I can't read their entries! And I haven't been able to read anything about it on the Internet. I couldn't resist reading some of Minderella's accounts, so I know that ****WARNING: SPOILER**** Carrie goes to Paris and something happens with Big and she gets into a fight with Miranda.. And that, frankly, is more than I wanted to know. A self-imposed S&TC-talk ban is near impossible, but I must do it! I've been in love with the show for far too long to ruin it now.

****SPOILER DONE****

Sigh. Three of my four all-time favourite shows have been cancelled: Party of Five (years ago, I know); Buffy; and now this.

Let's hope Six Feet Under sticks around.

(I realise how sad it is to like watching television shows, but being pretty much on my own kind of sucks. I like having shows I love - something to look forward to watch week, and getting involved in intricate characters that aren't in novels or books I have to read for class. It's refreshing and a nice, detached way of involving myself in alternate realities.)
